THE MURALS
Painted by hand, at building scale.
Every building here is being repainted with desert-hill murals - layered bands of sand, clay, terracotta and sage, with plant silhouettes drawn two and three storeys tall. The painted landscape carries the same species going into the ground beneath it, so the wall and the garden read as one place rather than a decoration applied to a building.
Concept renderings of the mural work now underway. The finished paintings are made by hand and will differ from these.
The artist
The murals are being painted by Paz, an Albuquerque artist who works under the handle pazehecatl. The work is done on site, building by building, as the renovation moves through the community - which means residents watch the walls change in real time rather than arriving to a finished job.
